Live Scan is electronic fingerprinting used across California for background checks. Many jobs, professional licenses and volunteer roles require it before you can start. We capture your fingerprints and send them on to the state on your behalf.
What to bring
Two things make your visit quick.
- The completed Request for Live Scan Service form (BCIA 8016) from the agency or organization that asked for your background check
- A valid government-issued photo ID
How it works here
The fingerprinting itself is quick. What happens after is out of our hands.
- Walk in or call ahead
- Walk-ins are welcome. Call ahead if you would like to check before you drive over.
- How long it takes
- Fingerprinting at the counter usually takes a few minutes.
- Cost
- Live Scan fees have two parts: a rolling fee for the fingerprinting appointment, and a separate state and federal processing fee set by the type of application on your form.

- The Department of Justice and the FBI send results straight to the agency that requested your background check. They do not come to us or to you, and the timing is set by the state, not by us.
